Instrumental Ensembles
The Handbell Choir
The Handbell Choir rehearses seasonally on Sundays after church. Directed by flutist Emily Clough, our handbell choir is growing and so is our collection of handbells, all donated in loving memory and/or thanksgiving. No prior musical training is required to join the Bells, and older kids and teens are also welcome to join! Contact the office at office@ascensionsilverspring.org for more information.
The Sligo Creek Recorder Group
The Sligo Creek Recorder Group rehearses at various times when they are playing during worship services or at a special community event. Under the direction of Maybelle Kagy, talented musician and retired music teacher, the recorder group brings joy not only to Ascension Church but to many others as they do outreach with their music in venues outside of the church. Contact the office at office@ascensionsilverspring.org for more information.
Karen Ashbrook, Paul Oorts, and Sophie Chang
Ascension is blessed to have Karen Ashbrook — world-renowned hammered dulcimer musician, composer, teacher, and Healing Musician — as a member of the church. Karen often plays at special worship services and on Thanksgiving and Christmas mornings. You may order Karen’s CDs at https://karenashbrook.com. You will find yourself transported to a place of peace and tranquility, as you listen to her beautiful Celtic and Folk Music pieces. She often performs as the KA/PO duo with her husband Paul Oorts (harp guitar, 10-string cittern, mandolin, and musette accordion player), or as a trio with fellow Ascension member and cellist Sophie Chang.
Instrumental Solos and Chamber Music
We have a number of Ascensionites who play instruments and enjoy performing solo or duet pieces for church services. Both children and adults are welcome to volunteer their time and musical talents! Contact music director Bailey Joy Myers at music@ascensionsilverspring.org if interested.
