Mustard Seed Ministry Opportunities

The smallest faithful actions can produce the greatest miracles. This is the lesson of the mustard seed.  Ascension’s Mustard Seed Ministry offers simple moments of ministry that are easy to complete. Don’t know what to do to help with the needs you see all around you? Choose one or more of the Mustard Seed opportunities below.

  • Homeless Street Ministry – Consider donating $10.00 Giant or Safeway gift cards at church services or by placing them in the mail slot at Ascension House. This gift of simple dignity can be donated to help our homeless neighbors. Donations can also be made to the Deacon’s Discretionary fund. Please contact revterrimurphy@gmail.com for details.
  • Yard work and gardening help – Help to maintain the beauty of Ascension’s grounds. Please contact Leticia Read at leticiaread@yahoo.com for more information.
  • Little Free Library – Please donate used books to our Little Free Library box at the front of the church.
  • Little Free Pantry – Please donate non-perishable foods to help our neighbors in need. This box is located behind the church at the Sunday School entrance. 
  • Feed the 5,000 – A $10 donation to Shepherd’s Table will provide the ingredients for a casserole that serves 10 people. 
  • Pen Pal Project – Join with Interfaith Action for Human Rights to become involved in the Pen Pal Project for the incarcerated. E-mail Rabbi Chuck Feinberg at penpal.iahr@gmail.com
  • Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind – Located on Georgia Ave., Silver Spring, is seeking volunteers to assist the visually impaired with a variety of tasks.
  • Tommy’s Pantry – Volunteer to help at Ascension on Saturdays to prep and distribute food to needy neighbors. For more information, contact tommyspantry.org or Libbie Griffin at libbiegriffin@gmail.com
  • Diaper Ministry – Drop your diapers and wipes off in the Gathering Space on Sunday mornings to benefit Silver Spring/Takoma Park Mutual Aid. For more information, please contact Drew Snyder at drewsnyder@pobox.com
