Children
The Rising Voices of Ascension Youth Choir
The Rising Voices of Ascension Youth Choir, or simply “children’s choir” meets after church from 11:30 to 12, September through May. We work on building musical skills through games and other fun activities, and learn music to perform in church a few times a year. We use a “one room schoolhouse” approach and adjust the selection of the music each year to reflect the age groups represented. Older kids and teens are welcome, but may also be interested in singing with one of the adult choirs or joining The Handbell Choir depending on their interests and musical experience. The Christmas Pageant
A highlight of the year is the Children’s Christmas Pageant. Directed by Bailey Joy Myers and the Sunday School Teachers, each pageant is unique, telling the Christmas story in fresh ways that contemporary Christians can enjoy. During November and December, the Rising Voices Youth Choir shifts their focus to preparing the pageant, which usually involves a theatrical play combined with musical selections. There are opportunities for kids of all ages to have speaking or non-speaking roles as anything from the classic barn animals to (depending on the year) motorcyclists. The pageant is usually performed during the 10 a.m. service on a Sunday in Advent, and rehearsals are usually after church from 11:30 to 12:30 for 4-6 weeks leading up to the performance date. There are plenty of volunteer opportunities for adults (or older teens), including costume-making, set design, and assistant directing.
